Fort McMurray Leads the Nation Again!

Fort McMurray, Alberta - The most generous, caring community in Canada! For the third year in a row, Fort McMurray has been acknowledged as having the highest per capita contributions to the United Way Campaign!

“We are not the largest city and certainly don’t have the largest campaign, but our private and corporate citizens definitely have the largest spirit and sense of community” stated local United Way Executive Director, Diane Shannon. Returning from the United Way of Canada’s National Conference, she said that “We should all be tremendously proud to be part of this. Despite the negative reputation that surrounds much of this area of the country, this achievement reinforces what compassionate, generous people live here.”

Generating pledges of over $4.4 million dollars in 2008, the work of the United Way also continues to grow. Known primarily as a “funder” for many decades, their role in the community has expanded to addressing the recognized need to develop the capacity of non-profit agencies and their personnel to really have a lasting impact in our community. The United Way continues to provide financial support to 23 different agencies and over 50 programs for those that don’t have the same advantages and opportunities that many of us take for granted.

The 2009 annual community campaign for the United Way of Fort McMurray will kick-off on September 10th, 2009. The organization is confident that the great success of the United Way campaign will continue and that the generosity of individuals and corporations in Fort McMurray will once again show all of Canada what a dynamic community this is.
