United Way Community Building Awards 2010
The United Way of Fort McMurray celebrated their annual Community Building Awards Evening on June 02, 2010 at the Keyano Recital Theater.  On this evening we celebrated the generosity of everyone who helped us “build” this community.  Thank you to both the corporations and individuals for your generous investment in the United Way of Fort McMurray.  With everyone’s support, we are creating real change in people’s lives- meaningful, positive, lasting change.  Not just today, but for the long term.
And that means a better community for us all. Our campaign theme for 2009 was “I Believe in Possibility” which ran from September 09th to November 20th 2009.
With 6,900 donors and almost 1,500 leaders congratulations Fort McMurray for helping us achieve for the fourth year in a row the title of Canada’s Most Giving Community”

Cornerstone Award
You will see cornerstones in historic locations across this strong country of ours. The cornerstones of buildings made of bricks and mortar always ensure their foundations are straight and solid. This year the cornerstone award was presented to an individual who has been this strong cornerstone for her workplace campaign for many years.  She has been persevering and encouraging her peers to support the United Way.  In 2009 she ramped up the education and awareness and was able to garner great rewards.  As well, she initiated the involvement of a team of youth to support and event these youth many of which will become our future donors. This Award was presented to the
Catholic School Board Workplace Campaign chair Kim Gauthier.

Blue Print Award
No plan to build a home, an upgrade, or a great project can be undertaken without a great set of “Blueprints”.  A successful United Way campaign is no different.  The blueprint award is presented to someone who had a vision of increasing the donor participation and the number of leader donors in his workplace.  Suncor Energy did just that, with the creation of the “Battle of the Business Units” they surpassed their 2008 achievement increasing their overall participation by 61% for 2009.This Award was presented to Ron Barauskas.

Pillar Award
A Pillar is a strong individual support to a building, typically out front and centre.  Without the support of the strong pillars nothing can be built.  This award is presented to an individual who puts themselves out front and centre and welcomes others in their workplace to join in their efforts to raise awareness and involvement in the United Way Campaign. The Pillar award was presented to Finning Canada Workplace Campaign Chair Lana Luchenski.

~Thanks a Million Award~
Thanks a Million awards presented to two of the largest workplace campaigns in the country.  They are also acknowledged nationally as “thanks a million award” recipients, but we also recognize them locally.Syncrude Canada was amazing to watch throughout the 2009 campaign.  Their “energy” and commitment to the United Way was a force to be reckoned with.  The Strong support by their management encouraged the campaign chair and the vice-chair on to success.  They began with a burst of enthusiasm very early in the spring with raffles and special events.  Syncrude Canada is instrumental in the “New Hire” awareness initiative.  Syncrude’s employee campaign showed a 27% growth in leaders to 525 individuals and a total locally of $ 1.3 Million. In 2009 Suncor surpassed all expectations.  They recruited their team well and then trained their canvassers very thoroughly.  They held a highly sought –after title in the “Battle of the business Units”.  Strongly supported by their management team, the campaign chairs generated phenomenal enthusiasm, which really is a key to a great involvement and success. With a total of 588 leaders (this was a 94% increase) and an overall campaign total locally of $1.7 Million.

Community Building Awards - 2008 Campaign

~Pillar Award~
A pillar is a strong individual support to a building, typically out front and centre… This award is presented to an individual who put himself out front and centre and welcomed others in their workplace to join him in his efforts to raise awareness and involvement in the United Way Campaign.
Gary Chaulk at CNRL shaved - not only his mustache and beard which he had been growing. His wife had never seen him without it!  Also offered his hair to increase the pledges.  In all, with matching pledges from CNRL, his project raised $75,000 and Gary is definitely a pillar in our eyes.

~Cornerstone Award~
The cornerstones of  historic buildings always ensured their foundations were solid… The importance of the person who designed the building or had a strong involvement in the project was often an engraved on that special stone for posterity… Our Cornerstone Award is being presented to a team –
This team built great team spirit and enthusiasm.  By starting a great deal of fun that surrounded a “pink” hard-hat they developed wonderful comraderie  that went far to increasing the awareness which is the cornerstone to a successful United Way campaign.  Congratulations to Laird Electric

~President’s Award~
The United Way president holds this important office for a one year term and has the honour of presenting this most prestigious award.
The presidents award is for the highest employee participation.  This  is based on the total number of full time employees, divided by the total number of donors which gives you the participation percentage…
This year, with a total of 5,205 full time employees, of which 2,639 contributed, with 421 at the leader level, giving them a total of 51% participation and just edging out the nearest competition from Suncor at 47% is the winner of the President’s Award – Syncrude Canada

~The Blueprint Award~
No plan to build a home, an upgrader, or a great project can be undertaken without a great set of “Blueprints.  A successful United Way campaign is no different.  The Blueprint award is being presented to someone who had a vision of increasing the donor participation and the number of leader donors in his workplace.  He created a “blueprint” to achieve this. ..
A personal invitation to a wonderful social event held in his own home could only be received after employees had committed to becoming a leader in their campaign.  This prestigious evening was just the beginning of their success in 2008
Employee donations increased 108% And The overall campaign from 2007 to 2008 showed a 93% increase!  In addition the number of leader increased to 88 which is a 285% increase!
Congratulations to Larry Guthro of Finning Canada on receiving the Blueprint Award.
